Subsonic » Free Music Streamer

I highly recommend this product if you’re looking to stream music out of your home network to your mobile or your work machine at the office.  You do have to have a beginner’s level of networking knowledge (how to set up some port forwarding on your router), but beyond that it’s a breeze to setup, and totally blows the competition out of the water in terms of performance.

SimplifyMedia had fantastic performance for this purpose but unfortunately got gobbled up by Google and the service was killed.  Since then I’ve tried Orb and Libox, both of which had deal-breaking failures in one department or another.

Subsonic is strictly for music.  If you need to stream video look elsewhere.
